Red Wing Pottery

Stoneware Catalog

I am guessing that, because of extensive references to WW I, the catalog was printed relatively soon after production had begun at Red Wing Union Stoneware in 1920. The Red Wing Union Stoneware Company became Red Wing Potteries, Inc. in 1936. This facsimile catalog is a complete color reproduction of the original.

At the time this reasonably subtle advertising catalog was printed, Red Wing produced an extensive line of stoneware jars and crocks intended for use in preserving food. This 34-page catalog, Home Packing & Preserving the Red Wing Way was presented as a collection of canning and preserving recipes. Amusing squibs at the bottom of each page extol the virtues of the Red Wing product.

Of course, Red Wing also included helpful suggestions regarding which of its many wares would be most appropriate for use with each recipe. About 65 different stoneware pieces are pictured, with detailed descriptions and sizes for each. Prices are not given, except for the advertisement with pricing on the inside back cover, for a stoneware hot water bottle with an optional knitted cover.

This is a highly detailed and accurate reproduction of the c.1920 publication. We have digitally reproduced and restored the original 34-page catalog at an extremely high resolution. In addition, we have added a short introduction and compiled a 2-page index for ease of reference and identification. This is not a photocopy - our methods allow us to retain an unusual image clarity and depth of detail. Its true spiral binding, unlike a comb binding, allows this book to remain unharmed when left open at the desired place. The catalog is printed on special matte coated paper, and heavy clear vinyl covers protect the front and back.

This book is intended to be a permanent reference work -- several of our facsimile catalogs are already in museum research collections. Our c.1920 Red Wing catalog is a charming and unusual gift for yourself or your favorite Red Wing collector.
