A fascinating catalog showing mostly bentwood furniture, and also some pieces of turned and carved design. There is some question about the exact date of this catalog. Based on new information, we now date it as c.1890 - we'd previously dated it as 1906. The majority of Thonet experts with whom we have conferred believe the pieces are by Thonet and other Viennese makers including Kohn and Fischel, and that this catalog was issued in the early 1890's. Evidently many pieces are similar to those in the 1888 Kohn and Thonet catalogs. A small minority believe the pieces are all by Thonet, and date the catalog about 15 years later.

According to one collector, Castelltort sold furniture from a variety of Viennese designers at the 56 Pelayo address listed in this catalog. An address "40 Pelago" (possibly a misprint for "Palayo") is shown in the 1904 Thonet catalog reprint issued by Dover Publications. One expert believes that Castelltort moved to this address after Thonet closed their own shop at that address in 1910. According to one of our correspondents, Francisco Castelltort was an agent for Thonet during the years 1906-1911.

Many, thanks to all the aficionados of early bentwood who have written us regarding this catalog. Those with additional information are encouraged to correspond.

We have digitally reproduced and restored our original catalog at a high resolution. The pages are printed on a heavy gloss paper reminiscent of the original. This is not a photocopy - we can preserve image clarity and depth of detail not possible with other methods of reproduction. Where possible, the reproduction exceeds the image quality of our original catalog.

Its true spiral binding, unlike a comb binding, allows this book to remain unharmed when left open at the desired place. Heavy clear vinyl covers protect the front and back, and the cover image is reproduced on an even heavier weight paper than the inside pages. Our fine reproductions are already in some museum research libraries. This reproduction catalog is meant to be a permanent reference.
